This original wire service photograph of the 1923 World Champion New York Yankees has the look of parchment, carrying the history and tradition of the most venerated team in sports within its 6-1/2" x 10" borders. The picture, taken by photographer Henry Olen for the Pacific & Atlantic Photo Co., contains the original copyright notice on the back. Looming largest of all is Babe Ruth (who notched 41 homers, 131 RBIs and a .393 average that season) in the center of the back row, lurking over his pint-sized manager and nemesis Miller Huggins. Historians will be challenged to identify the other members of that hallowed team, which include Bob Meusel, Wally Pipp, Whitey Witt, Joe Dugan, Waite Hoyt, Bob Shawkey, Joe Bush, etc. The photo has held up distinctly well except for a few scattered creases and a small tear on the right border.
