The mother of all championship teams is the 1927 Yankees. Rarely has the grandeur of that team been depicted in all its glory and with as much character and personality as in this rare 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" black&white wire service photo taken during spring training. Even while relaxed, the intensity of the players radiate from their eyes. The photo clearly shows the moods of its two most fabled stars. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are both clearly visible in the back row with their hats off. A playful Bambino is fourth from the right with his bear-like arms around teammates on either side, while Gehrig is eighth from the left looking grim and sullen, a surprising departure from the smiling Iron Horse in most photos. Other Hall of Famers on that remarkable team that won the AL pennant by a record 19 games and crushed the Pirates in a World Series sweep include: Earl Combs, Waite Hoyt, Herb Pennock and manager Miller Huggins. The photo is in excellent condition.
