This strikingly casual team photo of the defending champion 1929 Yankees is a departure from the usual spit and polish precision presented by the Bronx Bombers of yore. This photo was taken at training camp in St. Petersburg. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are already miles apart, Gehrig at the far left of the second row and Ruth fourth from the right in the back row. This is also the last time that manager Miller Huggins appears in a team photo. In September, the "Mighty Mite" would die of food poisoning at age 50. The sepia-toned, 8" x 20" photo offers a rare and revealing look at the real emotions behind the brass-button facade of the mighty Yankees, as typifed by the smug grin on owner Jacob Ruppert's face in the second row. While the photo has 1 fold mark, it is in otherwise excellent condition and is mounted under glass in a brown frame.
