For New York, finishing in second place two straight years was a sin, so in 1936 the club put out a call for a fresh face to lead them out of the woods. Joe DiMaggio came from the Pacific Coast League to play centerfield at Yankee Stadium and hit .323 with 29 home runs and 125 RBIs. Joe D. bolstered a lineup already graced by the likes of Lou Gehrig (.354, 49 homers, 152 RBIs), Bill Dickey (.363, 22, 107) and Red Ruffing (20-12) and the team won 102 games to take the AL by an amazing 19 games then routed the New York Giants in a six-game World Series. At spring training that year, this March 3rd International News photo caught an eager bunch of Bombers drinking in the wisdom of manager Joe McCarthy, with a 21-year-old DiMaggio seated cross-legged in the front row center. The 8" x 10" photo has the original International News Photo stamp caption on the back and is in good condition with some mild wear and light fold marks along the lower right edge.
