This remarkable photograph offers what may be the earliest recorded image of Lou Gehrig wearing a baseball uniform. The immortal Iron Horse played with the High School of Commerce team in his native New York City in the 1910s. The Gehrig legend is that he was awkward and uncoordinated at first, but clearly by the time this picture was taken in 1920 (when Commerce won the national high school baseball title) the 17-year-old Gehrig had become an imposing young man. Sitting with his arms crossed in the second row, he exhibits stature and muscularity, qualities that would carry him through the diamonds of Columbia University and then the major leagues for 17 Hall of Fame years. The sharp, clear 8" x 10" vintage photo appears to be off the original negative. The photo is in excellent condition.
