On April 30, 1939, Lou Gehrig limped off the field at Yankee Stadium after a doubleheader against the Washington Senators after having started 2,130 consecutive games at first base, or every game for 16 seasons. Two days later, Gehrig took his name off the lineup card and ended his playing days. Soon would come the devastating news that he was dying of an incurable disease. This Yankee Stadium game program of that bittersweet April 30 comes with an excellent-condition reserved-seat ticket stub from the game. The centerfold of the program features a completed scorecard of Gehrig's final game, in which he went hitless in four at-bats. The program is 12 pages and measures 6-½" x 10". While the pages have yellowed, the program is in excellent condition with little if any visible fraying and has a light vertical crease. The stub is in excellent condition with minor wear to the back. In our view, perhaps no other Gehrig memorabilia is more symbolic than these items signifying one of baseball's most tragic days.
