About the 7th inning at Yankee Stadium on May 18, 1998, David Wells' Buick-sized belly was rumbling, and not just for a cheeseburger. Wells had retired every Minnesota Twin hitter he had faced and stood 6 outs from achieving what no other New York Yankee pitcher had done since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series -- a perfect game. Wells got the side in the 8th, and in the 9th retired John Shave and Javier Valentin. Only Pat Mears stood in the way of history. Wells dealt, Mears popped up, and the roar of 48,000 fans engulfed the big man. This gold and black ring features a 20-point diamond on the "mound" surrounded by four diamond-chip "bases." The border around the face reads "Perfect Game 1998." The left shank has an engraving of Yankee Stadium and the date and the right shank the box-score and the Yankees "NY" logo. The name "Cloninger" is engraved on the back. This excellent condition ring was presented to Cloninger from Wells.
