One of baseball's most sure-handed second basemen and a dependable hitter, Gehringer led the AL in batting in 1937 and was also chosen MVP. He starred with Tigers pennant winners in 1934, 1935 and 1940. At the time of baseball's centennial celebration in 1969, a special committee of baseball writers named Gehringer the game's greatest living second baseman. In the neck of the jersey is the "Wilson" label and adjacent is the size tag, "40." Below this is an autograph rating a 9. On the left front tail is the year "1941" in blue chain stitch. Across the front of the jersey is the name "Detroit" in script letters and on the back is the player number "2." Both the name and number are made of blue felt. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
