When we think of Ted Williams, we think of perhaps the greatest hitter of our lifetime. The "Splendid Splinter" won 6 batting titles, led the AL in HRs and RBIs 4 times each, on his way to two triple crowns, while compiling a .344 lifetime batting average with 521 HRs in 19 years with the Bosox. We also remember in this time of national pride, the most distinguished service career of any professional athlete. When his country needed him, Ted eagerly slipped off his baseball flannels and donned his leather-neck Marine Corps Fighter pilot gear. Williams gave up three full seasons during World War II (1943-45) and most of two others during the Korean War (1952-53). When Williams was not wearing this 1953 Boston Red Sox home flannel, he was more than likely in the cockpit of his fighter jet in Korea. On the left front tail is the "McAuliffe" label and below is the size tag "46." Under this is "53 46 1 in. 9," which has been done in red chain stitch. The numbers denote the year, size, one inch shorter sleeves and the player number, respectively. Across the front of the jersey is the name "Red Sox," and on the back is the player number "9." Both the name and the number are made of red on blue felt. In the neck of the jersey is an autograph rating a 9. The bottom of the shirt has been custom-cut. The jersey shows game-use, and with the exception of the custom-cut bottom, appears to have no other alterations of any kind. Also included is a photograph showing what may be this very shirt in William's locker.
