Lou Gehrig's talents on the baseball field made him a hero to baseball fans everywhere. His strength and courage at the end of his career made him a legend to everyone. This 5" x 10" gold-plated American Sportsman plaque was apparently given to the "Iron Horse" by the members of the 1939 New York Yankees. A 15 line poem by John Kieran hails Gehrig as the leader of the Yankees on the field, as well as off. Underneath this appears the 1939 Yankee roster with McCarthy and Barrow. The plaque has slight discoloring on the front and a few scratches on the back appearing like it was removed from something. Overall, the plaque is in excellent condition.
