Barry Bonds' 2001 season was so mind-boggling that "inconceivable" might be a more appropriate description. Bonds not only broke Mark McGwire's single season HR record with 73 round trippers, but he also set new MLB milestones for walks (177) and slugging percentage (.863). The latter record topped Babe Ruth's .847, set in 1920. Bonds hit a HR every 6.5 at bats and had a phenomenal .515 on base percentage. He was the oldest player to lead MLB in home runs and picked up his fourth MVP award, also a first. The Bonds jersey and cap, being offered here from that memorable season has recently been on exhibit at the Newseum Museum in Arlington, VA. This "Friday Night Special" black knit alternate jersey was worn exclusively on Friday night, including the night of June 15, 2001, when Barry stroked career HR numbers 529 and 530 off Mark Mulder of the Oakland A's. On the left front tail of the jersey is the "Russell Athletic" label and below there is a patch reading "25 Barry Bonds Authenticated." Across the front of the jersey is the name "Giants," and on the back is the player number "25," both made of block orange/mustard tackle twill. On the back number "5," is an inscription reading "Barry Bonds HR 529/530." Next to this is a hologram stating "25 Barry Bonds Authenticated." On the left sleeve is the "San Francisco Giants Baseball Club" patch. The "Friday Night Special " cap has three labels on the inside brim. The first is the "Authentic Collection" label; the second is the "New Era" label; the third is the size tag "7 ¼." The player number "25" is written inside the cap in black marker. On the front of the cap is the "SF" logo in black/orange embroidered stitch. Next to this is an autograph and a hologram reading "25 Barry Bonds Authenticated." The jersey shows game-use and the cap shows wear, and each comes with a COA from Bonds. Also included is a receipt from the Newseum Museum insuring the items for $40,000.
