When the A's traded Mark McGwire to the Cardinals in July 1997, Giambi stepped in as Big Mac's heir apparent at first base. The burly slugger posted his first 100-plus RBI season the following year and consistently improved his power numbers over the next three seasons, culminating in an MVP campaign in 2000. This jersey was worn during the latter part of the 2001season. On the left front tail is the "Rawlings" label and adjacent is the flag tag reading "Set 2 2001." Across the front of the jersey is the name "Oakland" in script-style letters and on the back is a gray nameplate with the name "Giambi." The player number "16" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the jersey. The letters and numbers are made of green on gold tackle twill. On the right sleeve is the American League centennial patch. On the back of the jersey is an American flag patch commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
