On September 29, 1954 in the eighth inning of game 1 of the World Series, Cleveland Indians batter Vic Wertz stepped into the batters box. The score was tied 2-2 with runners on first and second and Wertz could win the game for his team with one swing of the bat. When that swing came on a 2-1 pitch, all who had sight of the ball thought the game was over as the ball soared 460 feet into the outfield. With the game on his shoulders, Giants outfielder Willie Mays ran with his back to the ball and made, quite simply it seemed, the greatest catch any player has ever made! Just two days later, Mays would sign this contract with the MacGregor Sports Products Company granting exclusive license to his name and likeness for a period of three years for the initial sum of just $1 with more to come in royalties. The two page oversized contract is housed in a power blue outer cover and has held up remarkably well over the years and is in excellent plus condition. It has been signed on the second page by Mays in blue ink with a signature that rates at least an 8.
