Al Smith grew up in a tenement house on New York City's East Side, working long hours to earn a humble living during his formative years. At the age of 30, with an elementary school education, Smith left the city for the first time in his life to take a seat in the state legislature in the capital, Albany. Within a few years, he would rise to the position of Governor of the State of New York and eventually would earn the Democratic nomination in a run for the Presidency. This 21.5" x 26.5" poster was produced in 1928 by the Democratic National Committee to help drum up support for their candidate and features some of the most famous names that the sports world has ever known. It is entitled "Champions of the World!, Champions of Al Smith" and depicts athletes such as Babe Ruth, Knute Rockne, John McGraw, Gene Sarazen, Gene Tunney, James Corbett, and Lou Gehrig, among others, pledging their support for Smith. The poster is in overall very good condition with visible fold lines. It remains a spectacular piece of sports history and Americana. Double matted and framed to 28" x 33".
