Rusty Staub began with modest natural skills and honed them to precision through perpetual practice. Baseball was equal parts discipline and sport to Staub. He retired with 2,716 hits and an unmatched reputation as a batter. In the neck of the jersey is a white label reading "44 72 4" which has been done in blue chain stitch. The numbers denote the size, year and player number, respectively. On the inside left front tail is the "Rawlings" label with the size, "44." Across the front of the jersey is the name "Mets" in script-style letters. The player number "4" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the jersey. All the letters and numbers are made of blue on orange tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the Mets "Skyline" patch. The number on the back and the patch on the sleeve have been restored. The front number is frayed and the color is slightly faded. There is some staining on the back of the shirt. The jersey shows game-use and with the exception of the above-mentioned changes, appears to have no other alterations of any kind.
