This striking World Series Trophy was awarded to Juan Berenguer as a member of the 1984 world champion Detroit Tigers. Berenguer had winning seasons as a part-time starter for Detroit in 1983-84. Extremely wild as a youngster, he learned to harness his 90-plus-mph fastball, which he liked to throw inside. His effectiveness was aided by his intimidating appearance and disposition. A mean-looking, husky Panamanian with long hair and a mustache, he was called "Pancho Villa" by his teammates. The trophy has a 7" in diameter black base with surrounding band of gold reading "World Champions, Detroit Tigers, 1984, Juan Berenguer." Ringing the base is an angled array of stanchions with flags bearing the names of all the major league teams, the highest one measuring 9-1/2" from the base. In the center is a gold crown sitting on an arc above a silver ball and team pins affixed to the base with the logos of the Tigers and Padres. The trophy is in excellent condition and includes a copy of a letter of authenticity from Juan Berenguer.
