The first of eight children, Babe Ruth was born on February 6, 1895. Although he was not an orphan he lived the life of one receiving little love and attention from his parents who worked long hours to support the family. Eventually Mr. and Mrs. Ruth felt that they could no longer care for their son and enrolled him at St. Mary's Industrial School and Orphanage for Boys. Classified as incorrigible upon his enrollment he was introduced to Brother Mathias who would become his surrogate father and the man who encouraged his love for baseball. It was through these early experiences that the Babe gained an affinity for children and would do anything he could to help out a child in need. This remarkable baseball is a testament to this. Ruth has penned "To The Homeless Children, Benefit Ball 1924" across the sweetspot. The Babe has signed an adjoining side panel "Babe" Ruth is striking back ink. Both the signature and inscription have been lovingly cared for through the years and rate a strong 8. The blue and red stitch Spalding Official National League Baseball has been very well preserved and shows a light and even tone with strong league stampings. A few scattered imperfections on the surface of the ball hardly detract from the overall appearance. It is hard to image a more representative example of the Babe's soft spot for children. The autograph comes with certification from PSA/DNA.
