In his nine years as the Cleveland Browns' fullback, NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown punished defenders en route to eight rushing titles and 12,312 career rushing yards. The two-time MVP impressed throughout his career, winning Rookie of the Year honors in 1957 and earning a Pro Bowl selection each season before retiring at the top of his game in 1965. Before committing to play football professionally, Brown was a multi-sport superstar who is considered by many to be the greatest lacrosse player ever. While playing for Syracuse University, he was selected as a Second-Team All-American as a junior and First-Team All-American as a senior for his play as a midfielder. Brown seemed to be able to win faceoffs and score at will, finishing second in the nation in scoring during his senior year. In the highly competitive 1957 Collegiate North/South All-Star Game, his last game as a lacrosse player, Brown scored five goals in a single half against the nation's top players. During his football career, he reportedly claimed, "I'd rather play lacrosse six days a week and football on the seventh." Brown was inducted into the United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983. Offered here are Brown's game-used Syracuse lacrosse helmet and All-American certificate from his incredible senior season. The orange helmet, which has two ear flaps and lacks the face mask it once had, shows tons of wear from Brown's intense play. The All-American certificate, which was presented to Brown by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, says "James Brown Syracuse has been selected as a member of the All American Lacrosse Team for the season of 1957 in the position of Midfield." It has a crease down the middle that does not affect its remarkable overall appearance and is otherwise in excellent to near mint condition. The helmet and certificate come with a copy of a photo of Brown in his uniform and carrying his lacrosse gear. They also come with a letter of authenticity stating that they were purchased directly from Jim Brown Jr., Brown's son, in the mid 1990s. These are one-of-a-kind items of a superstar directly from his family.
