It takes a certain type of athlete to guarantee victory; confidence, pride, and sheer bravado are all fairly characteristic of such guarantors. An even more selective group consists of those who have made good on their victory guarantee, and perhaps none of these athletes was as outstanding as Joe Namath. Namath's New York Jets, the AFL Champions, were 19-1/2 point underdogs to the NFL champion Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, and yet "Broadway" Joe guaranteed a Jets victory. Sure enough, Namath vindicated himself by leading his Jets to a 16-7 win, paving the way for the AFL-NFL merger by essentially legitimizing the AFL in the eyes of its critics. This green home mesh New York Jets jersey is circa 1973. On the left front tail of the jersey is the "Champion Products Inc." manufacturer's tag with the size "L." The player number "12" has been screened onto the front and back of the jersey in white and onto the white sleeves in green. The player name "Namath" has been screened onto the back of the jersey in white. The tagging, letters, and numbers are consistent with that of other Jets jerseys from that time period. The jersey shows game-use with consistent, even wear throughout and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
