Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman, joined the staff of George Washington and served as a major general in the revolution against the British. He served with distinction, leading the American forces to several victories. Lafayette wrote this letter in French on parchment. Dated December 31, 1825, the letter was penned in script in dark brown ink. The 9" x 14.5" piece of parchment has been folded in half with the letter on one side and the other side addressed, as this single page was folded into a makeshift envelope and mailed. The outside has been stamped in red with "1826," and the side with the letter has been stamped with a blue crest. The letter shows wear, as it has a few tears, ink blotches, and deep folds, but is still legible and ideal for display.
