Having been born premature in the segregated South in 1940, track superstar Wilma Rudolph achieved great success against the odds, becoming the first American woman to win three Olympic Gold Medals. Having won the bronze in her first Olympics appearance in Melbourne in 1956 as a 16 year old in the 4x4 relay, she went on to win the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and anchored the 400-meter relay team at the 1960 Rome games. Through her accomplishments she became one of the most celebrated female athletes in history.
