Pedro Martinez established himself as a major talent with a Cy Young award winning season in 1997, going 17-8 with a Major League best 1.90 ERA, 305 strikeouts and a league-leading 13 complete games, all despite being bothered by a strained ligament in his right thumb. He held NL batters to a .184 batting average and was the first ERA leader with 300 strikeouts since Steve Carlton did it in 1972. Two years later he won another Cy Young Award with the Boston Red Sox. On the left front tail of this home knit spring training jersey is the "Russell Athletic" label which includes the size "46." Across the front of the jersey is the team name "Expos" in script-style letters. The player number "45" appears on both the left breast and on the back of the jersey. The letters and numbers are made of blue on red tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the Montreal Expos patch. During spring training the jerseys did not have names on the back. The shirt shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
