In 1969, May's rookie year, he was a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year. Unfortunately however, when on marine reserve duty in Camp Pendleton that August, a mortar misfired and blew off part of May's thumb. On the front left tail of the jersey is a "Wilson" manufacturer's tag with was instructions, and a size of "44." Below that is "1971-Set 2" indicating the year, and set. On the right breast area and back of the jersey is a "17" done in red on white tackle twill. On the left breast area is the "White Sox" logo patch done in red on white tackle twill. On the left sleeve is a "White Sox" logo patch done in red, white, and blue tackle twill. This jersey shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
