Adolph Rupp, the longtime coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball history, having accumulated 876 total wins (third all-time) and a winning percentage of .822 (second all-time) in 42 years of coaching. During that time he also won four National Championships for the Wildcats. Part of that success can be attributed to Phog Allen, under whose tutelage Rupp learned the game of basketball in the early 1920s (he played for Allen at the University of Kansas). The two remained close friends over the years, as evidenced by this warm letter from Rupp to Allen, dated “November Four, 1968”, which was written on Rupp’s personal letterhead, with full name and address “Adolph Frederick Rupp, 175 Eastover Drive Lexington, Kentucky 40502”. The letter thanks Phog for some nice remarks he had written for a recent banquet. He concludes by asking the elderly Phog (then 83) to take care of himself. Rupp signed the bottom of the letter in black pen, with the signature rating an 8. Comes with a LOA from JSA.
November 4, 1968 Adolph Rupp TLS to Phog Allen (JSA) (Estate LOA)
