The premier catcher of the late 1930s and early 1940s, Bill Dickey was the soul of the Yankee dynasty. He bridged the Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio eras as a player and later the Mickey Mantle era as a coach. It was Dickey who finally broke Carl Hubbell's string of strikeouts against legends in the 1934 All-Star Game, singling off "King" Carl. Dickey used this catcher's glove with the Yankees during the 1930s and it shows tremendous use. The red "Spalding" label is on the outside and a terrific pocket has formed on the inside. The glove comes with a letter of authenticity from Dickey's daughter Violet Dickey Stafford on Bill Dickey stationery. According to Violet, her father saved the glove as a memento of his World Series championships and it was eventually passed down to her. The glove comes with an original wire photo of Dickey, his wife, and Violet holding this exact glove and Violet refers to this photo in the letter. The photo is stamped on back "Daily News Photography." A great vintage item with unbelievable provenance!
