One of the earliest known Spalding football jerseys from a major college. Princeton was a national powerhouse during the 1890’s and turn of the century. The wool turtleneck features the famous Princeton orange sleeve stripes as well as the Princeton “P” sewn into the front center of the sweater. The Spalding label has been sewn inside the back tail and this is one of the oldest Spalding labels that this Auction House has ever seen. A multitude of team repairs are sewn throughout the sweater. This is from the same styling period of the famous “Poe Brothers”. There were six Poe brothers who attended Princeton. The most famous being Edgar Allen Poe who was the captain and quarterback of the team in his junior and senior year; 1891 and 1892. On this page you will find a photo which is a style match of John Prentiss Poe Jr., also you will find a photo of the six Poe brothers all in their various Princeton jerseys. This is indeed a truly historical and important American artifact of the early years of college football and American history. Please note that a correction and/or update has been made to this lot and the printed catalog differs from what is online.
