The "original" Yankee Stadium opened on April 18, 1923 and was renovated in 1973, reopening on April 15, 1976 after an extensive three year renovation. Known as "the house that Ruth built," the urban legend is that the stadium's design was tailored to fit the left-handed power exhibited by Babe Ruth. The New York football Giants played at Yankee Stadium from 1956 to 1973, winning the NFL Championship in their first year there. The chant "Dee-fense!" is said to have originated there. The 1930 and 1931 Army-Navy games were played there, as well as 20 Army-Notre Dame games. Joe Louis' first-round knockout of Max Schmeling on June 22, 1938 took place there, as well as many other immortal events. The Yankees, of course, also won 20 World Series Championships while occupying the stadium during this time period. The original turnstiles were removed during the 1973 renovation, and this delightful example is one of them. This vintage “Perey” manufactured Yankee Stadium turnstile measures approximately 30” x 19” x 38”. It has a silver colored steel top with three banded accents and is made of blue painted cast iron. On one side is a 2-7/8" long window with five digit dials to tabulate the number of people coming through. On the opposite side is a jam bar with knob that allows the turnstile mechanism to stop or release. Fully restored to MINT condition, a very attractive piece of history that has been touched by millions. This item will require additional shipping costs due to its size and weight.
