McHale played basketball at the power forward position for the University of Minnesota from 1976 to 1980, with career averages of 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He was named All-Big Ten in 1979 and 1980 and still ranks second in school history in career points (1704) and rebounds (950). In 1995, to coincide with the University of Minnesota's 100th anniversary, he was selected as top player in the history of University of Minnesota men's basketball. On the left front tail is the "SAND-KNIT" manufacturers tag with the jersey size "46.” Above is the "Gopher Athletic Supply Co." distributors tag. Adjacent is a white felt strip tag with “McHale” embroidered in yellow. On the front is "MINNESOTA GOPHERS”. In the middle of the front and on the back is the player number "44." Across the back is the player name "MC HALE" sewn directly on the jersey. All lettering and numbering is done in burgundy on white tackle twill. The player number and the name on back appear to be more crisp and cleaner then the team name. The jersey is autographed on back in black marker and rates a 9. The jersey shows game-use and besides the near perfect restoration of the player numbers and player name appears to have no alterations of any kind. The autograph is accompanied by a LOA from JSA.
