The sixth overall pick of the Boston Celtics in the 1978 NBA Draft, Indiana native Larry Bird played one more year in college before beginning his storied professional career in Boston. In 1979, his last year at Indiana State, Bird led his team to its first ever NCAA Championship Game appearance, where he faced his future NBA nemesis Magic Johnson. In their rookie NBA season of 1979-1980, Bird beat out Magic for Rookie of the Year honors, further flaming a heated rivalry that would persist throughout the 1980s. During that decade Bird collected three NBA Championships (1981, 1984, and 1986), one of which came at the expense of Johnson’s Lakers. During the height of his storied 13 year career, Bird was named the NBA MVP in three consecutive seasons (1984-1986) in addition to being named the NBA Finals MVP in his 1984 and 1986 championship seasons. He was selected to the NBA All-Star Game 12 times (along with an All-Star Game MVP nod in 1982), and nine times to the All-NBA Team. Since he left the game in the early 1990s the Celtics have retired Bird’s number 33 to the rafters. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998, two years after he was named as one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time. Bird wore this Celtics uniform in the early 1980s. On the left front tail of the jersey is the "Medalist Sand-Knit" manufacturer’s size 46 tag. Above that is an additional manufacturer’s "Designed & Tailored Exclusively for the Boston Celtics" tag. Across the front is "CELTICS." Below that and on the back is the player number "33." Across the back is the player name "BIRD." All lettering and numbering is done in white tackle twill. On the back inside waistband is the "Medalist Sand-Knit" manufacturer’s tag. Written on this tag in black marker is the player number “33.” Attached is a size flag tag, which is unreadable. Next to this is the “79” inventory strip tag. The uniform shows game-use and appears to have no alterations of any kind. Accompanied by an additional LOA.
